Where Are Probate Cases Filed?

Starting in April 8, 2013, the Los Angeles Superior Court (LASC) consolidated its probate divisions in an effort to save between $55 million and $85 million for the 2013-14 fiscal year. All probate cases that were previously filed in Compton, Long Beach, Norwalk, Pasadena, Pomona, Santa Monica, Torrance and Van Nuys have now been centralized and are to be filed in Room 429 in the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in downtown Los Angeles. The Stanley Mosk Courthouse is located at 111 N. Hill St., Los Angeles.

Probate cases that are under the Antelope Valley jurisdiction will not be impacted by the change. Said cases will continue to be filed there.

Probate cases include matters concerned with wills, trusts, estates, guardianships and conservatorships. The court, however, plans to make some accommodations for transferred guardianship and conservatorship cases. According to Mary Hearn, the spokesperson for LASC, "The court will consider hearing the case at an outlying location if there is some overriding hardship that prevents parties in those cases from traveling to the Stanley Mosk Courthouse." In such cases, parties can make a motion to the court to have the matter heard in a location closer to where they reside.
